The exact cause of mental illness will vary for each individual however there are things that are recognized in the development of a mental illness. Generally, mental illnesses are a result of one or several events, sometimes being a combination of recent events and longer-term or personal factors.

It is believed that some of the events that may trigger or increase chances of a mental illness are:
- Life events - Personal factors - Family history - Personality - Serious medical illness - Drug and Alcohol use |
Research suggests that continuing difficulties – long-term unemployment, living in an abusive or uncaring relationship, long-term isolation or loneliness, prolonged exposure to stress at work – are more likely to cause a mental illness than recent life stresses. However, recent events (such as losing a job) or a combination of events can ‘trigger' a mental illness in people who are already at risk because of past bad experiences or personal factors.
